A doctor who is the closest to you is likely to know you’re sick, so it’s important to know where you’re located and who’s treating you, a University of New Mexico medical school professor says.
Dr. James T. Lee is a member of the National Center for Veterans Affairs, where he directs the Veterans Health Care System in Albuquerque.
Lee said it’s a good idea to ask around, but he’s also not the only doctor who does this, so here’s how to find your doctor in your local area.
Find out what your doctor’s specialty is 2.
Ask around about the doctor’s practice area 3.
Ask about the specialty in which you’re likely to be seen 4.
Ask the doctors to schedule appointments for you to get to know them more 5.
Visit the doctor and ask if you can see him or her, which will also help them make an informed decision about whether to recommend you for treatment 1.
Go to the nearest Veterans Affairs Medical Center 2.
Call ahead for appointments at the closest VA medical center 3.
Go online to see the doctor at your nearest Veterans Administration Medical Center 4.
Make sure you ask for a referral from a colleague to make sure you’re not the first to call for an appointment.

The center provides health care for the American public and is one of three national medical centers serving veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It has more than 200,000 veterans.
Lee says it’s also important to make a list of the doctors you’re looking for.
“There’s a big difference between the people that are closest to us and those that aren’t, but if you’re really trying to do a good job, that’s where you need to go,” he said.
Lee and Eric J. Dickson are veterans who treat patients in Albuquerque hospitals.
“It’s very important to be able to get a referral and be able talk to your local doctor,” Dickson said.
“So, it’s really important to just find the closest doctor.”
Go on the VA’s website to see if you’ll get a VA referral or call the VA hotline at 1-877-VA-VETS.3.
Make an appointment to see a doctor and follow up with your doctor if needed.
“You can get an appointment and talk to them, but it’s not always going to be easy,” Lee said.
If you have an appointment, make sure to ask about the location of your appointment.
“I think that people are more concerned about getting to see an MD or nurse or nurse practitioner that are more close to their house or work,” he added.
Check out the online portal to see what you can do to get more information on the nearest VA medical centers.
“Most people who go to the VA have to go through a referral process,” Lee added.
“And the way it works is they’ll put you on a list and ask you to call in and give them more information.”
The VA website also has information about where to get free treatment from doctors and other healthcare professionals.
“The VA website has a bunch of things, like the most up-to-date information about a particular area,” Lee told Shots.
Also, they have an on-call system, so they can call in at any time and give you information.”
Find your local VA clinic If you’re interested in getting care from a VA doctor, the best place to go is the local VA Medical Center.
“VA has some of the best health care in the country,” Lee noted.
“They have some of those best healthcare providers and they’ve got great access to resources.”
There are plenty of clinics across the country.
In addition to the Veterans health care system, there are clinics across New Mexico, including Albuquerque, and a few more are in Texas, Florida, Texas and elsewhere.

Make arrangements to get medical care If you plan on getting a care from the local clinic, you may want to check out a few things to get your plan in order.
First, you’ll want to figure out if the local doctors are experienced in treating patients.
“Some doctors, they’re really good at treating veterans,” Lee explained.
“A lot of them are vets that have served in Iraq, or they’ve served in Afghanistan, or are veterans that are serving overseas, and they know how to treat a lot of these veterans.”
